Project Work
PROJECT SUMMARY
Tamar has extensive experience with project work of varying nature and size. Most relate to hydro turbine installations. Some of our major recent projects are detailed below.
Project scope – design, supply, installation and commissioning of one 4.2MW 3 jet pelton turbine, direct coupled to a synchronous generator, complete with all electrical, control system, civil, 6.6kV switchgear & 66kV switchyard. The scope also includes the automation of one of the existing units that is to remain in service. The control system will provide full remote access/operation of the site. The turbine will be designed and supplied by V.A. Tech. The hydraulic system and control switchboard will be manufactured by Tyco Tamar. The generator will be supplied by Indar. The 66kV switchyard to be supplied and installed by O’Donnell Griffin
· Mangatawhiri, New Zealand – Expected Completion May 2005
Project scope – design, supply and commissioning of one 230kW francis turbine, direct coupled to a synchronous generator, complete with hydraulic system and electrical switchboard. The project utilizes excess energy available within the New Zealand water supply system, supplying electricity back into the local grid. The turbine, design by Orengine will be manufactured by Tyco Tamar, along with the hydraulic system and the electrical switchboard. Installation and control system to be performed by Tyco Services in New Zealand. Commissioning expected to be completed approx. March 2005
Project scope – design, supply, installation and commissioning of two 300kW Francis turbines with induction generators and control systems. The project design utilizes riparian/environmental flows feeding from the water supply reservoir, supplying electricity back into the grid. Turbine designed by Orengine and manufactured by Tyco Tamar at our works, along with the generator switchboard, control system and hydraulic power pack. Induction generators were supplied by TECO, generating at 415V.
· Tumut 3 – Snowy Mountains, NSW - Completed September 2003
Project scope – design, supply, installation assistance and commissioning of six (6) 150kW fixed flow turbines with induction generators and control systems. Project design utilises cooling water from the station main units (250 MW each) and integrates mini-turbine operations and control into the existing station system. The turbines replaces existing pressure reducing valves, which reduced the overall noise level within the station. Energy generated is supplied to the NSW grid. Tyco Tamar selected fixed flow Francis machines as the turbine and mounted these with the generators to provide a unitised bedframe arrangement.
This project was to design, supply and commission a fully self-contained hydro generating and control unit mounted in a standard shipping container. This is a stand-alone electricity supply for a local village infrastructure. Tyco Tamar designed and manufactured the 240 kW Turgo Impulse turbine, associated pipework, control and protection system. The generator was a synchronous unit from Mecce Alte.
· Terminal Storage, South Australia – Completed August 2003
This project was for a turnkey, 1600 kW, 6 jet Pelton Turbine energy recovery system, located within the Adelaide Metropolitan area at the Terminal Storage Reservoir. The system is designed to utilise the excess head in the penstock that feeds the reservoir, and feed electricity back into the grid. The turbine was designed and manufactured by Tyco Tamar at our works. An AVK synchronous generator was be used, generating at 11 kV. The Generator switchgear was supplied by Schneider. The turbine control system and hydraulic power pack was also manufactured at Tyco Tamar’s works. Tyco O’Donnell Griffin were contracted to undertake the civil works and to perform the mechanical and electrical installation. Successfully commissioned in August 2003.
This project was a turnkey, 850 kW Francis turbine package, located at Parangana Dam in North Western Tasmania. This system utilises the energy from the riparian water flow released from the dam, required for downstream river ecology, as well as irrigation and water supply.
Tyco Tamar designed, supplied, installed, and commissioned all equipment required for the project, including penstock, valves, turbine, generator, switchboards, substation, hydraulic power pack and local and remote control systems to interface with the existing communication facilities.
The turbine was designed by Orengine, and manufactured by Tyco Tamar at our works. The generator is an induction unit built by TECO and the substation was supplied by Schneider The Penstock used was Mild Steel Concrete Lined pipe, manufactured by Tyco Water. The switchboards, hydraulic pack and control system were all designed and built by Tyco Tamar. Installation commenced in the first week in February, beginning with the installation of the 1200mm, 70m long penstock. Practical Completion was awarded on the 17th April, 28 weeks after award of contract
· Pemberton, WA, Australia – Completed August 2004
This project is part of a heritage tourism development recreating Pemberton’s hydro station that was used to power the town from the 1920s to the 1950s. The plant consists of a vertically mounted 110 kW Kaplan turbine energy recovery system feeding energy into the grid. Tyco Tamar’s contract covers the design, supply and commissioning of the turbine, alternator, and associated control, protection and hydraulic equipment. Design and construction has been completed at Tyco Tamar’s works. Installation is fully completed, commissioning is to be completed when significant rains make water available

· Bayswater, NSW, Australia – Completed June 2002
This project was for a turn-key, 900 kW Francis turbine energy recovery system, located at the Macquarie Generation’s Bayswater Power Station, Muswellbrook NSW. The system was designed to utilise excess energy from the discharge of water from a cooling water storage dam. Tyco Tamar’s sub-contract covered the design, supply, installation and commissioning of the turbine, alternator and associated equipment, including switchboards, hydraulic power pack and control system to interface with the existing water supply requirements. This turbine was designed by Orengine, and manufactured by Tyco Tamar at our works. Alternator used was an ABB unit of induction type, 3.3kV. Switchboards and Hydraulic Pack were also designed and manufactured at Tyco Tamar’ works.

· Mt Stromlo, ACT, Australia – Completed February 2000
This project was for a turn-key, 700 kW Francis turbine energy recovery system, located at the Mt Stromlo Water Treatment Plant, feeding energy into the grid. Tyco Tamar’s sub-contract covered the design, supply and commissioning of the turbine, alternator and associated equipment, including switchboards, hydraulic power pack and a complex control system to interface with the existing water supply requirements. This turbine was manufactured by Orengine. Alternator used was an AVK unit of synchronous type, 415V. Switchboards and Hydraulic Pack were designed and manufactured at Tyco Tamar’s works.
· OK Tedi Mine, Tabubil P.N. G. – Completed September 1999
This project was for a complete refurbishment of the Yuk Creek power station, located at BHP’s Ok Tedi copper mine in Tabubil, PNG. The contract covered the design, supply, installation and commissioning of a new turbine, alternator, power supply and hydraulic power pack, and refurbishment of the existing switchboard with new electrical and control system components The turbine unit was a 2.3MW Twin Jet Pelton Turbine, designed and manufactured at our works, to fit into an existing station previously housing a Turgo Impulse turbine. Alternator used was an AVK unit of synchronous type, 11kV. The control system was a fully governed type, with output based either on consumer demand, or inlet weir level.
· P.N.G. Maritime College – Engine Room Training Complex, Madang, PNG – Completed Sep. 1995
This project was for a ships engine room installation within the college complex. Equipment included the main engine, dynamometer, diesel gensets, boiler, control room, together with all the services and peripheral equipment normally associated with a ships engine room. Equipment control was by a PLC in conjunction with Citect monitoring and alarm detection.
· Tolukuma Mine, P.N.G. – Completed July 1995
This project was for the design, supply and commissioning of a Stand-alone (no existing grid) hydro turbine installation, consisting of three 760kW Turgo Impulse Turbine units, again totally manufactured at our works, including switchboards, control system and hydraulic power pack. Alternators used were AVK units of synchronous type, 415V. The PLC based fully governed control system was designed to interface with existing diesel genset power supply, but with turbines becoming the primary power source, dependent on water availability.
